For this report, we interviewed Caroline Haythornthwaite, a professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Illionois at Urbana-Champaign, and Chris McCarty, survey director at the University of Florida Survey Research Center.
Haythornthwaite talked about the differences between how the younger, always-connected generation uses different forms of communication as opposed to older generations. In this clip, she speaks about how e-mail communication -- an asynchronous activity -- differs from the use of cell phones, which allow us to be contacted at any hour of the day or night. She also identifies how we handle specific types of conversations via different mediums.
McCarty discussed the utility of sites such as Facebook and MySpace and whether they would ultimately change the way families communicate. In this clip, he speaks about the ways families could use sites like Facebook to communicate or strengthen ties and evaluates the relative importance of these forms of communication.
