Families and Technology

Technological advances come at us at a dizzying pace. In families, these new technologies and modes of communication (such as Facebook, text messaging and instant messaging) are quickly adopted by children and teenagers. How, then, does the introduction of these new forms of communication affect how families interact?

A recent study on networked families by the Pew Internet & American Life Project sheds some light on the subject, sampling 2,252 Americans 18 and older (based on the findings of a daily tracking survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates between December 13, 2007 and January 13, 2008) to find how living in an always-connected world affects family life.

The study found that the adults sampled tended to view technology largely as a positive -- citing that it helped enable shared experiences (what they called the "hey, look at this!" factor) and gave adults the ability to schedule around their busy lives. In fact, the majority of respondents said they found their family lives to be just as close -- if not closer -- than when they were growing up.

However, people don't seem to find all positives with the pervasive use of technology in communication. Its use, some say, has blurred traditional lines between work lives and home lives, since they can be contacted at almost all hours. Respondents also seemed to feel less satisfaction with the amount of time spent on hobbies and relaxing.

  • Interact with data on family communication and technology. Does technology bring families together, or drive a digital wedge between people? Are moms texting their children? What about e-mail?

  • Hear experts in the field talk about how new technology is changing traditional forms of communication. How do we decide to text someone as opposed to call? Does a generational divide change how we communicate? How can families use social networking to keep in touch?
