Wages and Fatherhood

Decades after feminists fought for the right to maternity leave, it seems that a professional mother's absence in the workplace has created a freeze in her earnings, and a bump in her partner's.

A recent study shows that married men across the board see an increase in their wage premiums after the birth of their first child as opposed to women, who rarely enjoy any increase at all.

But not all men saw the same level of increase in their wage premiums.

These resources show where you can learn more about gender roles and relationship issues sparked by the income gap among married couples.

These graphics, which bring together data from the study and the U.S. Census Bureau, show black fathers overall earn less than white and Latino men.

Our reporting team spoke to these professionals, who say the wage penalty incurred by women, in contrast to the premium enjoyed by men, may not necessarily reflect sexism on the part of the employer; rather, the discrepancy may result from men holding traditional views of gender roles and working more hours due to cultural pressures of being the “bread-winner.”
