Interviews - Same Sex Parenting

For this report we interviewed Tamara Cohen, director of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Affairs at the University of Florida, and Clare Walsh, a UF Ph.D sociology student specializing in lesbian identity and family formation.

Tamara Cohen shared her experience as a member of a same-sex parent couple as well as her profession opinions. Cohen is the first appointed director of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Affairs at the University of Florida. She decided three years ago with her partner that they were both ready to be mothers. They reached the decision that Cohen would undergo in vitro fertilization and carry their first child, Tobias. She said they decided to give Tobias a hyphenated last name to create a common identity and to find a known donor so that her child would be able to find his biological father when he turns 18.

Clare Walsh researches lesbian identity formation and lesbian families. As a second year Ph.D sociology student at the University of Florida she teaches sociology of gender and sociology of human sexuality. As a social constructionist, she believes that many of society's ideas about family and sexual orientation are culturally influenced or created.
