Many Eyes Visualization: Acupuncture v. Traditional Treatment for Knee Pain Caused by Osteoarthritis

What the chart represents

The WOMAC pain score is used to measure arthritis pain over time. Arthritis sufferers rate the pain they feel in different body positions during the course of their treatment. A higher WOMAC pain score indicates more severe, inhibiting pain. The range is from 0, which reflects no pain, to 6.1, which reflects extreme pain.
The WOMAC pain score is usually rated along with functionality and stiffness.

In the study used for this chart, participants
receiving acupuncture, an acupuncture placebo and traditional therapy started the study with an average pain score of 5.25. Study participants rated their own pain at the start of treatment, after 13 weeks of treatment and after 26 weeks of treatment.

About the data visualization

This style of chart is called a line graph. A line graph shows continuous change in a factor over time. When the line for a treatment type declines over time, the patients using that treatment experienced less pain throughout the course of the study. Thus, traditional acupuncture was more effective at reducing knee pain than traditional treatment or acupuncture placebo for the study participants.
