Bullying

Life is difficult enough without having to battle bullies on a daily basis, but what if one just person could prevent the stress and torment caused by intimidation? A recent study shows that popular adolescents can determine how their peers view bullying, and are able to sway students to reject bullies or become bullies themselves. Although school violence in general has decreased in the past decade, individual cases of bullying are on the rise. It is therefore necessary to examine exactly how popular adolescents influence fellow students in order to put an end to bullying in schools.

Then, hear what the experts have to say with interviews with Dr. Gary Geffken, a pediatric and clinical child psychologist, and Kathleen Mahoney, a 24-year-old substitute teacher who created a bullying prevention program during her internship.

Bullying is a more serious and complex issue than the usual schoolyard scuffle, and many organizations offer resources to help you understand how and why bullying occurs. These sites also list resources for therapy and prevention for bullying victims, their teachers and their parents.
